Meaning & History

Feminine variation of Alexander. In Greek mythology, it was an epithet of the goddess Hera and also one of the names of Cassandra. The name was used by various early Christian saints and was also the name of Nicholas II's wife, the last empress of Russia. Originally from Germany, she was born as Alix but was given the name Александра (Aleksandra) when she converted to the Russian Orthodox Church.
