Nijolė

Meaning & History
Nijolė is a Lithuanian feminine given name of uncertain etymology. It is considered a pseudomythological name, invented in the 19th century by Polish-Lithuanian historian and writer Teodor Narbutt for his reconstruction of Lithuanian pagan mythology. Narbutt presented the name in its Polish form "Nijola," attributing it to a goddess of the underworld in works such as Dzieje starożytne narodu litewskiego (Ancient History of the Lithuanian Nation). However, this mythological status lacks authentic ancient sources and is now regarded as a literary creation.

The name gained popularity in Lithuania during the 20th century, particularly in the mid-1900s. Notable bearers include Nijolė Ambrazaitytė (1939–2016), an opera singer and politician; runner Nijolė Sabaitė (born 1950), who competed internationally for the Soviet Union; and Nijolė Sadūnaitė (born 1938), a Catholic nun and Soviet-era dissident recognized for her human rights activism. Despite its fabricated origin, Nijolė remains in use, reflecting a broader 19th-century trend of reviving and creating nationalistic names in Eastern Europe.
