Meaning & History

Feminine form of Sabinus, a Roman cognomen signifying "a Sabine" in Latin. The Sabines were an ancient central Italian people whose lands were eventually absorbed by Rome after several wars. Legend has it that Romans abducted Sabine women during a raid, and when the men came to rescue them, the women brokered peace between the two groups. Several early saints bore this name.
