Meaning & History

From the Hebrew name לֵאָה (Leʾa), likely derived from the Hebrew word לָאָה (laʾa) meaning "weary, grieved" [1]. It may alternatively be connected to the Akkadian littu meaning "cow". In the Old Testament, Leah is the first wife of Jacob and bore seven of his children. Jacob's other wife was Leah's younger sister Rachel, whom he favoured. Leah subsequently offered Jacob her handmaid Zilpah so that he might have more children.

While this name was used among Jews during the Middle Ages, it did not become a typical English Christian name until after the Protestant Reformation, when it became common among the Puritans.
