Meaning & History

Means "gatherer of the people" in Greek. In Greek mythology this is the name of the father of Odysseus. Shakespeare later used it for a character in his tragedy Hamlet (1600), where Laertes is the son of Polonius. His final duel with Hamlet results in both their deaths.
