Tarḫunz

Tarḫunz was the weather god and chief deity of the Luwians, an ancient people of Anatolia during the Bronze and Iron Ages. His name, stemming from Tarḫunt-, is a Luwian form of the Hittite god Tarḫunna, both derived from the Proto-Anatolian participle *Tṛḫu-ent- meaning “conquering,” from the Proto-Indo-European root *terh₂ (“to cross over, overcome”). This root has cognates in Latin trans, German durch, and English through. The same theonym appears in other Anatolian languages: Carian Trquδ-, Milyan Trqqñt-, and Lycian Trqqas/Trqqiz, the latter identified with Zeus.

Etymology

The name Tarḫunz reflects the widespread Anatolian pattern of naming the storm god with a term emphasizing victory or dominance. The Hittite form Tarḫunna exhibits a geminate -nn-, while the Luwian version uses a simple nasal. Both are linguistic descendants of the same earlier form. Tarḫunz, like Tarḫunna and the Hurrian god Tešub, was a storm and weather god. He was often depicted wielding a lightning bolt and his myths included victories over chaos monsters, parallel to the Hittite dragon Illuyanka. The syncretism among these traditions is well documented: Hittite, Luwian, and Hurrian pantheons merged through cross-cultural interactions in the Bronze Age Near East.

The Luwian heartland lay in southern Anatolia, where inscriptions and rock reliefs show Tarḫunz as a supreme deity. He was sometimes equated with the Semitic storm god Hadad and later syncretized with Jupiter Dolichenus in the Roman period. The widespread diffusion of Tarḫunz worship attests to the Luwian cultural influence before the region’s Hellenization.
