Pafnutiy is the Russian form of Paphnutius. The name ultimately derives from the Egyptian phrase pꜣj-pꜣ-nṯr, meaning "the one of God," via the Greek Paphnoutios. It was borne by several early Christian saints, most notably Paphnutius of Thebes, a 4th-century bishop who had a significant impact on church history. Pafnutiy appears primarily in Russian contexts, particularly within Orthodoxy.
Despite its ancient roots, the name remains rare even in Russia, where it is mostly remembered for its connection to the 17th-century monk Pafnutiy of Borovsky, founder of the Pafnutiy Borovsky Monastery, as well as the 20th-century poet Pafnutiy Anfinogenov. Variants include the Greek forms Paphnoutios and the older Paphnutius.
