Etymology and Biblical Origins
Ishvi (also spelled Isvah or Jesui in some translations) is a biblical name of Hebrew origin. It means "he resembles me" or "he is like me" in Hebrew, derived from the root shavah.
In the Old Testament, Ishvi is mentioned as a son of Asher (the eighth son of Jacob, born to Zilpah, Leah's handmaid). According to Genesis 46:17 and 1 Chronicles 7:30, Ishvi was one of the four sons of Asher, alongside Jimnah, Isvah, and Beriah, as well as a daughter named Serah. He thus became a progenitor of the Israelite tribe of Asher.
Notable Bearers
As a minor figure in the Hebrew Bible, Ishvi is only briefly mentioned in genealogical lists. There is no biographical narrative associated with him beyond his lineage.
Cultural and Historical Significance
The tribe of Asher, to which Ishvi belonged, settled in the fertile coastal region of northern Canaan. Asher's sons are listed in both Genesis and Chronicles, and these names have been preserved in biblical genealogies for centuries.
