Signifies "night" in Arabic. Layla was the beloved of the poet Qays (known as Majnun) in an ancient Arab tale, most famously retold by the 12th-century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi in his poem Layla and Majnun. This story was a celebrated romance across medieval Arabia and Persia. The name entered the English-speaking world following the 1970 release of the song Layla by Derek and the Dominos, whose title was inspired by the medieval tale.
