Medieval Occitan form of Elizabeth. It spread across Spain, Portugal and France, becoming popular among royalty by the 12th century. It gained prominence in England during the 13th century when Isabella of Angoulême married King John, and was further reinforced when Isabella of France married Edward II the next century. In Spain and Portugal, this is the standard form of the name Elizabeth, while in other countries like France it exists as a parallel name alongside Élisabeth. Two Spanish ruling queens bore this name, including Isabel of Castile, who funded the voyages of Christopher Columbus.
