Meaning & History

The origin of the name is uncertain. In Greek mythology, Athena was revered as the deity of wisdom and strategy, and she served as the protective deity of Athens, a city in Greece. It is probable that her name originated from the city rather than the other way around. The earliest recorded reference to her appears to be a Mycenaean Greek inscription found in Knossos on Crete, dating back to the 15th century BC.

As the daughter of Zeus, it was believed that she emerged fully formed from her father's head after he had ingested her mother, Metis. Athena is also closely linked to the olive tree and the owl.
