Meaning & History

The origin of this name is unclear. It belongs to a character, also referred to as Darth Vader, in the Star Wars film series, which was conceived by George Lucas. Despite his denial, Lucas might have drawn inspiration from the surname of his friend and fellow director, Ken Annakin. Although the character makes earlier appearances, the name Anakin is first spoken in the third installment, The Return of the Jedi (1983). It was subsequently added to a re-release of the second film.
