Sinbad is a legendary mariner and the hero of a story-cycle within The 1001 Nights (also known as Arabian Nights). The name derives from Arabic Sindibād, of uncertain origin, possibly from Persian. Sinbad is a later addition to the tales, not present in the earliest 14th-century manuscript, appearing as an independent cycle in 18th–19th-century collections.
According to the stories, Sinbad hails from Baghdad during the early Abbasid Caliphate (8th–9th centuries CE). He undergoes seven fantastic voyages throughout the seas east of Africa and south of Asia, encountering mythical monsters, supernatural phenomena, and treasure. His adventures reflect the era of Arab and Muslim maritime exploration.
