Pétur

Meaning & History

Pétur is the Icelandic form of Peter, ultimately derived from Greek Πέτρος (Petros) meaning "stone". The name was a direct translation of the Aramaic name Cephas, given to the apostle Simon by Jesus in the New Testament (Matthew 16:18 and John 1:42).

In Iceland, the name Pétur has been in use since the Christianization of the country and remains common. Notable bearers include Pétur Blöndal (1944–2015), an Icelandic politician; Pétur Marteinsson (born 1973), a retired footballer; and Pétur Guðmundsson (born 1962), an Olympic shot putter. The Faroese variant Petur is also used, as seen with Petur Alberg (1885–1940), a violinist and songwriter.
