Etymology
Muamer is the Bosnian form of Muammar, an Arabic masculine name derived from the root ʿamara meaning "to live long, to thrive". The name signifies "long-lived" or "given long life", reflecting a wish for longevity and vitality.
Notable Bearers
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Muamer is fairly common, often adapted from the Arabic original to fit South Slavic phonology. Notable Bosnian bearers include several footballers: Muamer Adžem (born 1989), Muamer Avdić (born 1995), Muamer Salibašić (born 2001), Muamer Svraka (born 1983), and Muamer Taletović (born 1977), Swedish-born Muamer Tanković (born 1995); as well as boxer Muamer Hukić (born 1986). Outside the Balkans, the variant appears as Moammar or Muammad; globally, the best-known bearer is Muammar Gaddafi (1942–2011), the former leader of Libya.
Other variants include Muammer in Turkish, and a similar Arabic spelling Maʽmar used by historical figures such as the hadith scholar Ma'mar ibn Rashid (8th century), the philologist Maʽmar ibn ul-Muthanna, and the poet Jamil ibn Ma'mar.
