Mikhal is the Biblical Hebrew form of Michal 2, the name of a figure in the Hebrew Bible. It derives from the Saul name chain and appears in ancient Hebrew texts, where it links to the story of King David. In later Hebrew literature, the pen name Mikhal (spelled מיכ״ל) was used by the 19th-century poet Micah Joseph Lebensohn (1828–1852), a notable figure of the Hebrew Haskalah (Enlightenment) movement in Vilna. Lebensohn, borrowing the biblical name, became famous for his lyrical and narrative poems that blended Romantic and Jewish themes.
