Etymology and Meaning
Lula is a diminutive of Luiz, the Brazilian Portuguese form of Louis. The name Louis itself derives from the Latinized form Ludovicus of the Germanic name Ludwig, meaning "famous warrior." In Portuguese usage, Luisinho is another affectionate variant derived from the same root.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The name Louis has been borne by 18 kings of France, starting with Louis I, son of Charlemagne. Eminent figures include Louis IX (Saint Louis), who led two crusades, and Louis XIV (the Sun King), builder of Versailles and Europe's longest-reigning monarch. Outside France, kings of Germany (as Ludwig), Hungary (as Lajos), and other realms have also used the name. After the French Revolution, when Louis XVI was guillotined, the name fell out of favor.
