Meaning & History
Hokolesqua is a Shawnee masculine name meaning "cornstalk" in the Shawnee language. The name is historically associated with an 18th-century Shawnee chief also known as Cornstalk, who led the Shawnee during the Ohio Valley conflicts with European settlers.
Cornstalk was a notable figure in the Ohio Country, known for his leadership in Dunmore's War (1774) and the Battle of Point Pleasant. Despite initial attempts at diplomacy, tensions escalated, leading to conflict. After the war, he advocated for peace but was murdered in a treacherous attack by Virginia militiamen in 1777 while under the protection of Fort Randolph. His role as a leader and his tragic fate remain significant in Native American history.
