She was a niece of the chief Nana and was born into the community of Chief Victorio. According to Apache oral history, after the murder of her first husband by a Comanche raid, Gouyen avenged his death by infiltrating a Comanche victory camp, seducing and killing the responsible Comanche leader, and retrieving her husband's scalp. Her courageous actions became legendary.
