Meaning & History

From Greek προμήθεια (prometheia) signifying "foresight, forethought". In Greek myth, he was the Titan who bestowed the knowledge of fire upon humanity. Zeus punished him by chaining him to a rock where an eagle fed daily on his liver, which regenerated each night. Heracles ultimately freed him. His brother was Epimetheus.
