Meaning & History

Signifies "servant of Yahweh" in Hebrew, from עָבַד (ʿavaḏ) "to serve, to worship" and יָהּ (yah) referring to God. In the Old Testament, this is one of the twelve minor prophets, author of the Book of Obadiah, which foretells Edom's downfall. Several other biblical characters also bear it.
