Meaning & History

From the Hebrew name יָעֵל (Yaʿel) meaning "ibex, mountain goat". In the Old Testament, Jael was the wife of Heber the Kenite. After Sisera, captain of the Canaanite army, was routed in battle by Deborah and Barak, he sought refuge in Heber's tent. While he slept, Jael killed him by driving a tent peg through his head.
