Meaning & History

Derived from Arabic فطم (faṭama) meaning "to abstain, to wean". Fatima was a daughter of the Prophet Muhammad and the wife of Ali, the fourth caliph. She is regarded as the exemplary Muslim woman, particularly among Shias.
