Meaning & History

From the Hebrew name קָיִן (Qayin) possibly signifying "acquired", derived from the root קָנָה (qana) meaning "to acquire, to purchase". In the book of Genesis in the Old Testament, Cain is the first son of Adam and Eve. He slew his brother Abel after God accepted Abel's offering of meat rather than his offering of plant-based foods. Following this act, Cain was condemned to a life of wandering.
