The origin and meaning of this name remain a mystery. It might stem from the Celtic components *artos meaning "bear" (Old Welsh arth) and *wiros meaning "man" (Old Welsh gur), or *rīxs meaning "king" (Old Welsh ri). Another possibility is that it is connected to the less well-known Roman family name Artorius.
Arthur is the central figure in Arthurian legends, a 6th-century king of the Britons who fought against Saxon invaders. Whether or not he was based on a real individual is uncertain. He first appears in Welsh poetry and historical records, possibly in the 7th-century poem Y Gododdin and more clearly in the 9th-century History of the Britons [1]. However, his character was not fully developed until the 12th-century chronicles of Geoffrey of Monmouth [2]. Subsequently, his stories were expanded upon by French and English authors.
The name gained widespread use in England during the Middle Ages due to the popularity of Arthurian romances, and it saw a resurgence in the 19th century. Notable individuals named Arthur include the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), the author of Sherlock Holmes mysteries Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), and the science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008).
