Meaning & Origin
Šuwaliyat is a Hittite theonym of uncertain meaning, attested as the name of a vegetation god in the Hittite pantheon. The name is considered to be etymologically Hittite, formed with the suffix -att used to create nouns from verbs or adjectives. In Hittite cuneiform, syllabic writings such as dšu-wa-li-ia-az (nominative) and dšu-wa-li-ia-at-ta-an (accusative) have been found. Despite a superficial similarity, the name is unrelated to that of the Hurrian goddess Šuwala. Etymology and Character Šuwaliyat was associated with plant growth and the grain goddess Ḫalki, often appearing alongside her in ritual texts. He was worshipped in several Hittite cities, including Kanesh, Ḫupišna, Ḫunḫuišna, and the capital Hattusa. The god is closely linked to the Hurrian deity Tašmišu (whose name means "strong" in Hurrian and who served as brother and attendant of the storm god Tešub). In Hittite adaptations of Hurrian myths, the name Šuwaliyat could be used to designate Tašmišu, reflecting Hurrian influence on the Hittite religion. Syncretism and Relations Šuwaliyat is part of a syncretic web connecting Hittite and Hurrian deities. The chain extends to Tešub, the Hurrian storm god, whose name possibly means "high" and who was later conflated with the Hittite god Tarḫunna, the weather god whose name derives from the Luwian root tarḫ meaning "to overcome, to conquer." Tarḫunna was also identified with the Semitic god Hadad. While Šuwaliyat was not directly conflated with these storm gods, his connection to Tašmišu places him within this broader theogonic network. Notable Bearers As a deity name, there are no human bearers; its significance is entirely mythological and religious. Šuwaliyat appears in Hittite ritual texts, where he may be represented by the sumerogram dNIN.URTA, a logogram used for various deities associated with vegetation and warrior aspects.
